Are you one of those people who believe that what you write in your Facebook status updates will one day be revered by the masses and quoted and requoted through history alongside greats such as Aristotle, Einstein and Plato? Do you believe that when your friends read your status update they are overwhelmed by a sense of awe and mystical enlightenment? If so, you are not alone.
I have taken the time to research, observe, and collect (and believe me, it did not take long) some random philosopically-oriented status updates of various users from Facebook. Although all are intended to be philosophical in nature, some are more accurately described as cliches, while others are more inline with utter nonsensical crap.
Here is an example of a cliche: "Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer!!!" - Well, thanks for that, I really would not have known that if you had not just said it!
And here is an example of utter nonsensical crap: "See the world with the eyes of your heart..." - Crap, sorry, just crap. There are no better words to describe it.
"The choices we make define the person we are" - Thank you so much for reiterating that which has been jammed down my throat since birth! Surprise! You are not the first to say this!
This person "would NEVER go back and change anything if I could... otherwise I wouldn't be where I am now!!!" - No, maybe you would be somewhere better, but the world does not want you to know that, do they? You just stay right there where you are, like a good little puppet!
"Even your true mates can turn into backstabbers! I thought that I knew who my friends were... goes to show you can't trust anyone but yourself!" - What a revelation! Wow, I mean... REALLY! Again, a cliche in the context of a worldly break-through! This is old news, love.
Some gobbledygook from a modern day hippy: "Life is not a popularity contest... it IS a quest" - I had to remove some dots, why do Facebook Philosophers think more dots makes their post more meaningful?
More gobbledygook: "Truth... is... a flow, not a predetermined sentence..." - Again, approximately 8746 dots removed.
The uneducated philosopher: "Don't make it *life* harder... it actually does" - No comment.
The uneducated "entrepreneur": "Why; is the most powerful question and(sic) entrepreneur can ask" - Seriously? Does that mean the entire Generation Y (aka Gen "WHY") are entrepreneurs? Can I ask WHY "entrepreneurs" do not have to worry about their terrible grammar? I grew up always being told to ask why. So I do not think this is a new thing. I would have thought a more important question for entrpreneurs would have been "how?".
I had to save this one for last: "Is wondering if it's all worth it in the end?" - Don't we all, my friend. But hey, I think, at the end of this article, it has all been worth it!
